Buying and selling safely
For buyers
- See the car before you pay. Meet in a busy public place during the day, or at a known dealer lot.
- Never pay a deposit to "hold" a car, or any clearing, shipping or "port release" fee to someone you haven't met.
- Check the papers. Match the VIN/chassis number on the car with the customs papers, vehicle licence and proof of ownership.
- Accidented and salvage cars: bring a mechanic or panel beater, check for frame damage, flood marks (rust under carpets, musty smell) and airbag lights.
- Cars for parts: confirm which parts are included and that the engine/gearbox numbers match before paying.
- Pay by bank transfer only after inspection, and get a signed receipt or change-of-ownership letter.
For sellers
- Don't hand over keys or papers until payment has cleared in your account — fake transfer alerts are common.
- Take a friend along to viewings and test drives, and keep a copy of the buyer's ID.
- Describe damage honestly. Accurate ads sell faster and avoid disputes.
